“Taishan” moved to a new house and made his formal debut
In the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong Nature Reserve, “Taishan” who had returned from America is expected to move into the No.5 Villa of Leopard Mountain in the Ya’an Bifengxia Gorge Base until putting through one-month quarantine on March 9, 2010. On the occasion, a grand ceremony for his new arrival will be held by the Center, the Wolong Panda Club and Sichuan Automobile Industry Group Cooperation who adopted “Taishan” for life.

Four-and-a-half “Taishan” arrived at Ya’an Bifengxia Gorge Base in the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda on February 5, 2010, and then conducted quarantine for one month in strict accordance with the related standard and requirement of the quarantine procedures. The staff should put on the protective clothes when passing in and out of the quarantine captivity, periodically sterilize the captivity inside and outside and the cleaning tools, periodically remove and burn the remaining bamboo, and ferment the accumulated stools. Wu Daifu, his full-time keeper, spent a heap of time in chatting with “Taishan” every day, gently stroked his forehead and nose in feeding, and lovingly communicated with “Taishan” in Sichuan dialect, which will result in “Taishan” feeling uneasy in the unfamiliar and stress environment. Soon “Taishan” can answer to Sichuan dialect, and stand and sit down under Wu’ command, and carry through conventional physical examination such as blood drawing and type-B ultrasonic in the event of no anesthesia. Wang Chengdong, his full-time veterinarian, sampled and detected his stool and urine every day, and set up an applicable health plan. The staff took good care of “Taishan” so that he can be quickly suitable for climate, environment and foods in his hometown and maintain the good trusting relationships with the staff. These days, “Taishan” sound in wind and limb put on his weight from original 87kg to present 90kg. “Taishan” is keen on bamboo in hometown and special sorghum as soon as he got back for a week or so, in addition to phyllostachys nidularia, fishscale bamboo, bambusa sinospinosa, and ting bamboo, just like a well-behaved gentleman when eating.

Currently there are 10 subadult pandas aged 2-4 in the villa district of Leopard Mountain, where it has ample and comfortable space, excellent surroundings and abundant vegetation. “Taishan” will get into the No.5 Villa, covering an area of 30m2 inside and 1000m2 outside, where “Taishan” will enjoy his free and comfortable life in the log house for playing and resting, trees for climbing, and a dense grove. In addition to a suit of video camera, the “Taishan” fans can catch sight of his new life at any time through website.
With “fans” all over the world, “Taishan” during his quarantine is cared and blessed by many enthusiasts through various ways, who actively enter for voluntary service, among them, there being the F99 caring car owner and panda American enthusiast, from whom the Center and the Group specially select 30 representatives for this ceremony and ask them to sweep and arrange the new place and plant a loving bamboo forest in person.

With the investment of the Research Center, the No.1 Villa of Baixiongping will be decorated completely to be the independent residence for “Taishan”. The Center will release the information related to “Taishan” through the official website (www.chinapanda.org.cn). In particular, there is a special area for collection of new home decoration proposals in www.yemaauto.cn. We wholeheartedly hope that the broad masses of the caring people can give you good suggestions to “Taishan” for better life.
